Lunazul was founded by Francisco Beckmann, a seventh generation descendent of Jose Antonio de Cuervo. He founded the Tierra de Agaves estate in 2004 on a mission to create the world's first true small batch, 100% agave tequila at an affordable price point, thus Lunazul was born. Francisco passed along the tradition to his own son, Jorge Beckmann, who became president of Tierra de Agaves in 2005.
Jorge Beckmann grew up among the family's agave fields, where he gained firsthand experience growing, distilling and bottling great-tasting tequila. Since 2005, Jorge has overseen the operation of the Tierra de Agaves Distillery. As our president, he sets the standards for making Lunazul.
The master distiller’s task is to turn three basic ingredients - agave, water, and yeast - into smooth-tasting tequila. Lunazul’s master distiller, Francisco Quijano, uses no additive ingredients or additional processing, so Lunazul has nothing to hide behind. That’s why you taste our quality in every sip.
Francisco came to Tierra de Agaves in 2007. A decades-long veteran of the tequila industry, his mission is to promote and protect authentic Tequila values. From 2005-2007, he worked as the President of the National Tequila Chamber of Producers, and led the effort to designate the blue agave fields of Jalisco as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Overseeing more than four million agave plants, Master Agave Grower Jose Fernandez knows through experience which plants should be selected to make great tequila. His expertise helps Lunazul deliver the smooth taste you can rely on.
Growing up in the fields of the village of Tequila, Jose was born into the agave-growing business. His father, agave legend Don Jose, passed down his knowledge and instincts as Jose grew from a young jimador (harvester) to a Master. Today, he leads a team of agricultural engineers who combine the latest in technology with a legacy of experience.
